Discovering new books

Love at first sight: Mama’s Kisses, by Kate McMullan, illustrated by Tao Nyeu. This is an unabashedly happy world. Just looking at the jacket makes me smile.

In “Creating the Picture Book,” author-illustrator Steve Henry and I try to help illustrators move beyond “Wow!” and “Love it!” to an appreciation of the craft behind the artistry of the words and pictures here. It feels so effortless—and even careful study can't erode the sense that magic has happened.
